MITCHELL, S.D. (MITCHELL NOW) A winter weather advisory takes effect at 8 AM on Wednesday.  It will remain in effect until 9 PM.

Meteorologist Jen Hacker with the National Weather Service in Sioux Falls says Mitchell can expect a mix of rain and freezing rain to start.  The main story for today, she says, will be the snow that will move into the area this afternoon.  Hacker says Mitchell is on the gradient of the snowfall, meaning there will be a sharp transition from a small amount of snow to 6+ inches.  If the band shifts at all, Mitchell’s forecasted total of 3 inches could increase to 6 inches.  She says the snowfall should taper off around 6 PM.  Wind will not be much of a factor in today’s winter storm system.

Hacker says they are watching another winter storm system expected to move through the area on Thursday night.  As of this morning, only moderate snowfall totals are predicted.
