Davison County continued preparations for the legalization of medical marijuana yesterday. Voters in November approved Initiated Measure 26, which legalizes marijuana for medical use.
The Davison County Planning and Zoning Board yesterday approved the first reading of a zoning ordinance amendment for medical marijuana. Davison County’s acting Planning and Zoning Administrator Mark Jenniges explained some of the changes that were made, including adding definitions of cannabis and its related facilities.
The Davison County Commission then approved an ordinance for the permitting and licensing of medical marijuana establishments. Those wishing to operate establishments would need to obtain a license. One topic that was discussed by Jenniges was whether those licenses could be transferred. Any management change would need to come back to the commission for approval. Additionally, licenses would need to be renewed annually.
A second hearing for both will be held at the next Davison County Commission meeting on Tuesday morning. Medical marijuana is set to become legal in South Dakota on July 1st.
