The Mitchell City Council on Tuesday night approved a Corn Palace renovation study to be done by Sioux Falls-based Schemmer Associates. Mitchell Mayor Bob Everson says the study will look at maximizing space at the tourist attraction and possibly increasing the seating capacity from 3,500 to 5,000 people. Everson says the goal is to bring more events and people to Mitchell via the Corn Palace between October and April. He says removal of the stage is one option that could be discussed to host events like dart tournaments, pool tournaments, farm shows, or sportsmen shows. It is hoped that the renovations would be funded through private donations. The study is expected to take four months at a cost of $120,000 and will be funded through entertainment tax fund reserves and additional revenue received over the 2021 budget.
