SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (AP) — Strong winds, icy roads and blowing snow are making travel difficult in South Dakota. High winds warnings are in effect for all of South Dakota Friday where the gusty conditions are creating hazardous conditions for truck drivers and other high profile vehicles. According to the Highway Patrol, more than 10 semitrailers overturned on state roadways Thursday. Forecasters say wind gusts could reach up to 70 mph in western and central South Dakota. The road conditions have prompted some schools to close or delay classes. The Sisseton School District and Sisseton Wahpeton College are among those closed Friday.
A winter weather advisory has been issued for areas just north and east of Mitchell until noon today. Light snow is expected until early afternoon, but strong winds gusting as high as 50 MPH could create visibility issues. Up to 1.5 inches of snow could fall today in the advisory areas. There have been reports of several accidents in and around the Mitchell area, including a jackknifed semi on I-90. A wind advisory remains in effect until 6 PM.
