The South Dakota Soybean Processors will build a new soy and sunflower processing facility south of Mitchell. CEO Tom Kersting says the plant’s been in the works for the last few years. He says they hope to be operational in the fall of 2024 or spring of 2025. The plant will be able to process around 35 million bushels of soybeans annually. Kersting adds that the soybean oil will go to the renewable diesel market and also food customers. For the soybean meal, the market is domestic livestock feed and export. Ethan farmer and South Dakota Soybean Processor Board Member Lewis Bainbridge says this project is a huge boom for all farmers in South Dakota. 50 new jobs are expected to be created when the plant begins operations. When completed, this will be the third processing facility for the South Dakota Soybean Processors. The other two facilities are located in Volga and Miller.
