Mitchell residents could see an increase in water and sewer rates to fund infrastructure projects.  The potential hikes were discussed during a work session prior to Monday night’s Mitchell City Council meeting.  Public Works Director Joe Schroeder told the council that the rate hikes would actually trigger more grant money for funding the projects.

He says in the near future, the proposal would be a $2.81 increase on the base rate for sewer along with a $.29 increase for the water usage rate for a sewer user.  A $7.84 increase in the base rate for water could also be proposed.  That money would be used for the ground storage tank project and a wastewater treatment plant facility.

Schroeder says this work needs to be done, and that these projects have been pushed back.  City Administrator Stephanie Ellwein added that if the projects are delayed, they will be more expensive for Mitchell residents due to the grant money not being available.

No action was taken on the proposed rate hikes last night.
