MITCHELL, SD (Mitchell Now) — Construction season remains in full swing across Mitchell as August comes to an end, with road improvements, new development and infrastructure projects continuing into the fall.
One of the most visible projects is along North Ohlman Street, where Mitchell’s first roundabout is taking shape at West 23rd Avenue. Concrete work was underway in August as part of the larger North Ohlman Street improvement project.
Work is also affecting traffic farther south. The intersection of Kemper Street and Ohlman Street closed Aug. 24 for earthwork and installation of a gravel base course. The city anticipates reopening the intersection by the end of Sept. 1, although weather and construction conditions could affect the schedule. A detour is being provided along Indian Village Road.
Elsewhere, reconstruction projects on Fifth and Sixth avenues are among the city’s major street improvements this year. The projects include water, sewer and street infrastructure work and were expected to be completed this fall. Earlier this year, city officials said bids for the projects came in below initial estimates.
Development isn’t limited to streets.
A proposed expansion of the Wheel In Business Plaza on Mitchell’s west side moved forward in August after the Mitchell Planning Commission approved a site plan. The project, planned near West Elm Avenue and South Iowa Street, would add seven business suites.
Another major city investment is on the horizon. Mitchell sought bids this summer for a new 7,748-square-foot fire station at 2800 N. Main St. City bid documents call for the station to include living quarters and associated site improvements, with substantial completion targeted for Sept. 1, 2027.
Drivers traveling outside the city also face construction. The South Dakota Department of Transportation is reconstructing a section of Highway 38 east of Mitchell as part of an $8 million project scheduled to continue into November.
With projects ranging from neighborhood streets to commercial development and public safety infrastructure, Mitchell residents can expect construction activity — and some associated detours — to remain part of the landscape well into the fall.
