MITCHELL, SD (Mitchell Now) — Drivers can now see Mitchell’s first roundabout beginning to take shape at the intersection of West 23rd Avenue and North Ohlman Street.

Construction is part of the larger North Ohlman Street improvement project stretching from 23rd Avenue to Kemper Avenue. The City of Mitchell closed the section and the 23rd Avenue intersection in May as work got underway.

The roundabout grew out of a traffic study conducted by HDR Engineering with the city and Schmucker, Paul, Nohr and Associates. The study examined several Mitchell intersections and recommended a 150-foot-diameter, single-lane roundabout at 23rd and Ohlman. Approximately 2,200 vehicles traveled through the intersection daily when the study was presented in 2025.

The Mitchell City Council approved moving forward with the roundabout design in September 2025. Because the project extends onto the county line, the Davison County Commission later approved the city project at no cost to the county. County records describe the roundabout as a long-term solution based on multiple traffic studies.

The intersection work is being completed alongside extensive underground infrastructure improvements on North Ohlman Street. Plans include replacing aging sewer lines, along with water, storm sewer, curb, gutter and paving improvements. Some utility infrastructure in the area dates to the 1920s.

Recent photos of the construction show newly poured concrete outlining the roundabout and approaches as the project continues.

The city has said North Ohlman Street from 23rd Avenue to Kemper Avenue will remain closed until further notice, and motorists should continue using alternate routes.
