A 56-year old man from Billings, MT, sustained life-threatening injuries in a multiple vehicle accident on Sunday afternoon in the head-to-head construction zone on Interstate 90 between Presho and Kennebec.
Preliminary information from the South Dakota Highway Patrol says the accident involved four vehicles and stopped traffic.
The man from Billings was driving a 1998 Winnebago camper eastbound and collided head on with a 2018 Ford Expedition traveling westbound. The 47-year old driver of the Expedition, a man from Edgewood, Washington, received serious, non life-threatening injuries. His wife and a child had minor injuries.
The driver of a pickup and camper following the Winnebago attempted to avoid hitting the Ford Expedition, which caused the pickup and the camper to jackknife. A westbound vehicle behind the Ford Expedition was hit by the Winnebago. Neither of these drivers were injured.
The drivers of the Winnebago and the Expedition were both life-flighted to Sioux Falls. Traffic was briefly rerouted until both lanes reopened.
At this time there are no charges pending, but the Highway Patrol investigation continues.
