Chamberlain, S.D. – Two of South Dakota’s first commercial wind turbines have been decommissioned and contractors dropped them to the ground yesterday. The towers were constructed in 2001 when Basin Electric and Class A member East River Electric Power Cooperative jointly brought the wind turbines to South Dakota.

The towers are located next to Highway 50 north of Chamberlain, S.D.

Decommissioning is being done because the turbines are at the end of their useful life and replacement parts are no longer available.
