PIERRE, S.D. (MITCHELLNOW) South Dakota’s legislative session is all but over. Lawmakers passed a $7.3 billion fiscal year 2025 budget on Thursday, and they will be back in Pierre later this month to consider overriding any vetoes and to officially adjourn. The roughly two-month session largely aligned with Republican Gov. Kristi Noem’s agenda, with numerous bills passed on issues she pitched as priorities, such as funding prison construction, banning foreign entities such as China from owning farmland and creating a state office of indigent legal services, among other priorities. A proposed abortion rights ballot initiative drew attention from Republican lawmakers, who cemented the Legislature’s official opposition to the measure.
