MITCHELL, S.D. (MITCHELLNOW) Today is Tax Day in the United States.  Usually, taxes are due on April 15th but the date can move if it falls on a weekend or a holiday.  The two holidays that impact Tax Day are Emancipation Day which is celebrated on April 16th or on April 15th if the 16th is a Saturday and Patriots’ Day, a celebration of the start of the American Revolution, which is celebrated on the third Monday in April.  Since Patriots’ Day is on April 15th this year, and the IRS has a major processing center in Massachusetts, which observes Patriots’ Day, taxes are due today.

Greenback Tax Service recently analyzed tax rates and policies considering factors such as personal income tax rates, state sales tax, average local sales tax, capital gains tax rates, inheritance taxes and corporate income taxes to determine the most and least tax friendly states in the country.

The highest taxed states are California, New Jersey, New York, Minnesota and Vermont while the states with the lowest tax burdens are Wyoming, South Dakota, Alaska, New Hampshire and Texas.
