Mitchell, SD (MITCHELLNOW) Senator Thune renewed his criticism of President Biden’s student loan forgiveness program. Thune points out that Biden is creating a climate where those who borrow to finance higher education are being led to believe that they will not be expected to repay loans at the conclusion of their educational journey which in turn is making lenders reluctant to make funds available for this purpose.
In a pair of recent cases, the United States Supreme Court ruled on the Biden administration’s loan forgiveness program. In Biden v. Nebraska, the Court struck down the student loan forgiveness program on a 6-3 vote and agreed that six other states, in addition to Nebraska, had standing to sue the Biden administration over its policy of student loan forgiveness. In the second case, Department of Education v. Brown, the Court ruled that individual borrowers who challenged the student loan forgiveness plan lacked standing to sue as they were not harmed by having their loans forgiven.
The debate over the program is ongoing.
