MITCHELL, S.D. (MITCHELLNOW) The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) announced a grant of $28,650,000 to South Dakota to assist in the identification and replacement of lead service lines to prevent exposure to lead in drinking water.

Lead can cause a range of serious health impacts, including irreversible harm to brain development in children.  For more information, including a state-by-state allotment of 2024 funding and a breakdown of EPA’s lead Drinking Water State Revolving Fund visit EPA’s drinking water website.

The City of Mitchell is currently doing an inventory of lead pipes leading from citizen’s homes to the water lines delivering water to households.  Employees of the Department of Public Works are going door-to-door doing the survey.  If citizens don’t want to wait, or missed the door-to-door survey, appointments can be made for this lead inspection by calling the Public Works Department at 605-995-8433.
