PIERRE, S.D. (MITCHELLNOW) The initiated measure to eliminate the sales tax on food has been validated and certified for inclusion on the general election ballot by the South Dakota Secretary of State’s Office. The title of the ballot question will be Initiated Measure 28.
As outlined in SDCL 2-1-16, the Secretary of State’s Office conducted a random sample of the petition signatures and found 86.55% to be valid. Based on the random sample’s results, 22,315 signatures were deemed valid. For an initiated measure to be eligible for inclusion on a general election ballot, it must have at least 17,508 valid signatures of South Dakota registered voters.
Any citizen may challenge the Secretary of State’s validation of the measure under SDCL 2-1-17.1 which states that citizens challenging the validation must submit an original, signed affidavit listing out each specific deficiency to the Secretary of State’s Office no more than 30 days after validation. Electronic submissions of affidavits will not be accepted.
For this ballot question, the deadline to file a challenge is Wednesday, June 12, 2024, by 5pm central time.
