PIERRE S.D. (MITCHELLNOW) Updating the historical listing of South Dakotans who have served in the South Dakota Legislature will be one of the topics of discussion when the One Hundredth Session Planning Committee holds its third meeting of the 2024 Interim on Thursday, June 6, 2024, at 10:00 a.m. (CT). The meeting is being conducted via electronic conference and in Room 413 of the State Capitol in Pierre, South Dakota, to allow for both remote and in-person participation.

Although South Dakota became a state in 1889, the state Legislature met regularly only every other year until the start of the 1960s, when it switched to annual sessions. That is why the 2025 session is the 100th regular session of the South Dakota Legislature. The One Hundredth Session Planning Committee, chaired by Representative Tony Venhuizen (R-Sioux Falls) with vice chair Senator David Wheeler (R-Huron), will receive subcommittee reports on a planned reunion of state lawmakers, possible mementos, education and outreach, historical displays, artistic writing to celebrate the citizen legislature, and fundraising.

The full agenda is available online. In addition to Representative Venhuizen and Senator Wheeler, members include Representatives Erin Healy (D-Sioux Falls) and Stephanie Sauder (R-Bryant); and Senators Jean Hunhoff (R-Yankton) and Steve Kolbeck (R-Brandon). Also serving on the committee are former state lawmakers Bernie Hunhoff and Matt Michels, and State Historian Dr. Ben Jones.
