MITCHELL, S.D. (MITCHELLNOW) Medical cannabis businesses in South Dakota will be required to pay substantially more for their state registration certificates starting later this year.
The price of the annual certificate will rise to $9,000. It’s currently $5,310.
The Department of Health of South Dakota supervises the medical marijuana program. The department set the amount at $5,000 in procedural rules three years ago when the program began. That was the maximum set in state law that voters passed in 2020.
After the Governor’s Office requested the fee go to a maximum of $28,000, the Legislature got involved. After some wrangling, back and forth, give and take, the legislature decided to set the maximum fee at $9,000 which is what it will be starting on July 1, 2024.
