MITCHELL, S.D. (MITCHELLNOW) Corn Palace Director Doug Greenway says the saga of the seats began in the 2022 budget cycle when fabric was ordered to recover the chairs in the Corn Palace. Due to lingering pandemic and supply chain issues, the fabric didn’t arrive until February of 2024.
A local upholsterer was contracted to turn the fabric into seat covers for the three different sizes of seats in the Corn Palace. There was enough fabric to make 540 seat covers. The first 540 seats will be completely done by the end of June.
Greenway plans to ask for funds to purchase enough fabric to do another 600-1000 seats in the next budget cycle. At this rate, it will take two more years – beyond summer 2024 – to finish recovering all the seats in the Corn Palace.
