MITCHELL, S.D. (MITCHELLNOW) Recently, the South Dakota High School Activities Association held a vote to change their constitution to allow Name, Image and Likeness (NIL) opportunities for high school athletes in South Dakota.  The vote required a 60 percent threshold to pass.  It got much more of that, as the final tally was 115 schools in favor to 7 opposed.

A student is now free to be compensated for endorsing a product, company or service as long as they do not wear a team jersey or logo or use the likeness of a school mascot or the background of their school’s facilities in photographs, billboards or other promotional materials.

It’s not known how often, or even if, a high school athlete will be able cash in on their athletic prowess.  One wonders if this NIL opportunity had existed when Mike Miller was in high school whether offers might have come his way prior to his move to college and then onto the NBA where he had a long and distinguished career.
