PIERRE, S.D. (MITCHELLNOW) Despite the State of Emergency due to flooding in South Dakota, Governor Kristi Noem took time out of her flood mitigation duties to attend the previously scheduled Tribal Public Safety Crisis Summit.  The purpose was to discuss law enforcement generally and drug cartels on South Dakota’s reservations specifically.  Several tribes refused to attend.

However, several tribal law enforcement officials as well as sheriffs of reservation, and surrounding, counties were in attendance as well as other state and federal law enforcement personnel to discuss the challenges facing South Dakota and the reservations specifically as it relates to criminal activity.

South Dakota Attorney General Marty Jackley was in attendance and said that regardless of where crime is committed, dedicated local, state, federal and tribal officers are working to stop it and prevent crime where possible.  Jackley says that law enforcement does a good job of cooperating across jurisdictional boundaries to investigate crime and to pursue criminals.

Governor Noem reiterated her commitment to be the Governor of all South Dakotans, no matter where they may live.  She said it’s important to face problems head on, together in a cooperative way.
