Last night our Kool 98.3 FM Amateur baseball game of the week featured the visiting Parkston Devils Rays vs the Dimock Emery Raptors in Emery. The Devil Rays got the scoring started in the top of the first thanks to a solo shot by Dylan Soulek and the Rays grabbed a 2-0 lead. They would add to their lead in the top of fourth on a three-run blast by Jonah Schmidt giving them a 6 to 2 lead. The Raptors would rally in the bottom of the fifth scoring 5 runs two coming off the bat of Jason Schmidt to take their first lead of the game 8 to 6. The Devils Rays Jonah Schmidt would hit his second home run of the game on a two-run bomb to grab the lead right back 9 to 8. Then like right out of a movie the Raptor’s Phil Johnson comes of the bench to pinch hit and doubles in 3 runs in the bottom of the eight to put the Raptors out in front 12 to 9. The Raptors Landon Waddell would close out the by the final of 12 to 9. The Parkston Devil Rays have now lost five games in a row while the Raptors have won three games in a row.

Deric Denning struck out 15 batters in a Sunshine League win over Parkston on Sunday by the final of 4 to 3. Denning threw nine innings for Mount Vernon, allowing six hits, four walks, and three runs while striking out 15 batters. Walker Hultgren, Chase Hetlund, and Denning each drove in one run on one hit, while Eric Giblin drove in a run on a sac-fly. Bradley Dean batted 1-for-2 with two walks in the win as well The Mount Vernon Mustangs on the diamond this Sunday hosting the Parkston Devil Rays starting at 5 pm.

The Winner Colome Pheasants have now won ten games in a row as the Pheasants Drew DeMers and Oscar Pravacek drove in six combined runs in a Sunshine League victory over Corsica on Sunday. Drew DeMers batted 1-for-5 with a walk and a homer driving in three runs, while Pravacek collected two hits, including a home run that drove in three runs. Austin Richey collected a double and a walk that drove in two runs, Austin Calhoon batted 2-for-5 with a double and an RBI, while Reed Harter and Dillon Lambley each drove in a run on a walk in the win as well. Patrick Starr earned the victory on the mound for the Pheasants, allowing eight hits, five walks, and eight runs in 6.2 innings, striking out five. The Winner Colome Pheasants are now 14 and 1 on the season.

The Mitchell Aces have now won three games in a row and are 4-2 on the season after beating the MVPCS Padres by the final of 10 to nothing. The Mitchell Aces offense came from Lincoln Bates who homered in the first inning and finished the game with four RBI’s. Mitchells Parker Mandell picked up the win for the Mitchell Aces going five innings allowing no runs on four hits while striking out seven. The Mitchell Aces will be back on the diamond on Friday night at home battling the Parkston Devil Rays starting at 7pm.

The Mitchell kernels girls’ basketball camps are taking place on July 9th and July 10th and are for girls in k-6th grades. Start time for k-2nd grades 1:00 p.m.-2 p.m. 3rd grades through 4th grades 10:45 a.m.- noon. 5th-6th grades 9:00 a.m.-10:30 a.m. The Mitchell kernels girls’ basketball camp cost is $45 per player or $65 per family for 2 or more campers. The cost of the Mitchell kernels girls’ basketball camps includes a Camp T-shirt. Mitchell kernels girls’ basketball camps is at Mitchell High School and is run by the Mitchell High School girls basketball coaching staff and players.

Linda DeBoer, president of the South Dakota High School Coaches Association, recently announced the names of the newest SDHSCA  2024 Coach of the Year recipients. The area recipients include The Head Coach of the Mitchell Kernels girls’ soccer team Scott Mullenmister. The Head Coach of the Howard Tigers boys’ basketball team Nick Koepsell, and the Head Coach of the Burke girls track and field team Tyler Uecker. These individuals will be recognized at the annual awards banquet, which will be held on Sunday, July 14, 2024, at 1 p.m. CDT at the Mitchell Highland Conference Center.
