SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (MITCHELLNOW) The southern border crisis is fueling drug and human trafficking in the US.
Minnehaha County Sheriff Mike Milstead says the open border with Mexico has created another profit center for the cartels. The profit center is the smuggling of illegal immigrants into the United States for $8000-$12,000 a person. That traffic in illegal persons is estimated to generate a billion dollars for the cartels.
Sheriff Milstead says those cartels are the Sinaloa Cartel and the Jalisco Cartel and they’re wreaking havoc in South Dakota with their drug trade. They both operate in more than 40 nations worldwide and control the bulk of the meth and fentanyl drug trade.
