The Mitchell 16u teener baseball team was at home yesterday competing in a doubleheader. The Mitchell 16u teener baseball team was facing a familiar foe in the Yankton Black Sox 16u baseball team. The Mitchell 16u teener baseball team won a close game vs the Yankton Black Sox 16u baseball team earlier in the year in a doubleheader 4 to 1 and 8 to 1.

The Mitchell 16u teener baseball team scored early and often scoring 5 runs in the 2nd inning thanks to Carter Mc Cormick one RBI Day and he scored three runs. He also finished the game going 2 for 3 at the plate. Mitchell’s Jaxon Hartman then followed suit with 1 RBI going 1 for 3 at the plate as well scoring a run. The Mitchell 16u teener baseball team would close out the Yankton Black Sox 16u baseball team winning by the final of 11 to 1. Kaiden Allen picked up the win for the Mitchell 16u teener baseball team going 6 innings allowing one run on four hits while fanning 4.

The Mitchell Kernels Cooper Star had a nice showing competing in a USTA tennis tournament over the weekend in Spearfish. Mitchell Cooper Star competed in the SLAM junior open in Spearfish winning his first match of the day 6-0,6-2 over Oliver Huxford in the first round. He knocked off Philip Soroka in the semis and then lost in the finals to Aaron Soroka to take home a second-place finish in the USTA tennis tournament.
Dakota Wesleyan University Athletic Director Ross Cimpl has announced the appointment of Ryan Chase as the new DWU cross country and track and field head coach. Chase, a 2020 graduate of DWU, holds a bachelor’s degree in history with a minor in political science and communication. He comes from his previous head coaching job at Mitchell Christian School in Mitchell, S.D.
 5B District baseball tournament started Thursday, July 25 at the Pond in Parkston and continues until Friday, Aug. 2. There will be six teams that qualify for the Class B state amateur baseball tournament, which is Aug. 7-18 in Mitchell. The first game on tap was the No. 4 Dimock/Emery vs. No. 5 Mount Vernon with the Raptors holding of a late charge by the Mustangs winning by the final of 6 to 4.

The Raptors, who built a 6-0 lead after five innings, received 10 strikeouts from Jason Schmidt. Schmidt allowed five hits, two earned runs and walked one batter in five innings. Phil Johnson allowed three hits, two earned runs, one walk and struck out one batter in four innings. Jason Schmidt also had two hits in the game. Peyton Nash and Sam Pischke had three hits apiece for Dimock-Emery, which had 12 total hits. Drew Kitchens added two hits, while Chase Arend and Josh Engquist each had hits. For the Mustangs, Walker Hultgren, Austin Graves and Bradley Dean each had two hits. Hultgren drove in two runs. Luke Tiesler took the loss, allowing 12 hits, five earned runs, two walks and struck out six batters in eight innings.

The Second game on tap featured the No. 1 Winner/Colome vs. No. 8 Parkston Devil Rays which turned out to be all Pheasants winning by the final of 15 to 5. The Pheasants Connor Hopkins struck out 13 batters and Winner/Colome pounded out 13 hits in a District 5B amateur baseball win on Thursday. Connor Hopkins allowed five hits, two earned runs and walked five batters on 152 pitches. Chandler Bakley paced the offense with four hits and two RBI. Austin Richey had three hits and drove in two runs. Derek Graesser, JJ Farner and Austin Calhoon drove in two runs apiece. For the Parkston Devil Rays, Seth Muth, Dylan Soulek, Jonah Schmidt, Jake Helleloid and Max Scott all had hits. Landon Sudbeck took the loss, allowing two earned runs, five walks, zero hits and had zero strikeouts in 1.1 innings.

The first two days of the District 3B tournament, July 27-28, will be held in Wessington Springs and will conclude in Chamberlain from July 29- Aug. 1

The Kimball/White Lake Nationals earned the No. 1 seed and will face the Chamberlain Mallards on July 27 at noon.

The 2024 DWU Football putt and shoot fundraiser is today Friday July 26th with a 10 a.m. Trap Shoot session at the Mitchell Gun Club. That will be followed by a 1:00 p.m. golf outing at Wild Oak Golf Course. The cost of the DWU Football shoot and putt fundraiser is $250 for one team =2 people. $100 for golf only with one participant or $400 for two teams.
