The 92 annual South Dakota State B Baseball Tournament kicked off last night at Cadwell Park with a great game right out of the gates. The Wessington Spring Owls out lasted the Akron Rebels of Iowa winning by the final of 10 to 7. The Spring Owls were aided by a six-run seventh inning helped Wessington Springs earn a comeback victory during the opening round of the State B tournament Wednesday.
Trevor Kenobbie batted 2-for-3 with a double and three RBIs, Drew Olinger batted 2-for-3 with a walk and two RBIs, Cade Mohling drove in a run on one hit, Clay Olinger collected an RBI-walk, while Blake Larson tallied two hits, including a double in the win. Parker DeJean allowed seven runs on seven hits and four walks in 6.1 innings, striking out four to earn the victory.
For Akron, Jared Kirkeby allowed nine runs on eight hits and two walks in six innings, striking out nine. Bryce Coppock and Nick Zabel each tallied two hits, Mason Coppock and Luke Hughes each tallied two RBIs on a hit and a walk, Arick Allard drove in a run on two hits and a walk.
The second game last night was one sided as the Larchwood Diamond beat the Burke Bombers by the final of 18 to 3 as Chase Vanderfeen and Mitch Preschon each had two hits and two RBIs, Keaton Grevengoed, Jacob Kindhart, Cody Groskruetz, and Gavin Lorenzen each drove in a run on two hits, while Micah Linn, Mason Ver Meer, Isaac Bambas, and Josh Van Beek each drove in a run on one hit.
Kyle Jensen allowed one hit and two walks in four shutout innings, striking out five. For Burke, Hunter Van Niewenhuyse allowed nine runs on 10 hits and two walks in 1.1 innings. Coy Determan and Gannon Thomas each drove in a run on one hit, Ben Witt had two hits, Brogan Glover had a hit, while Tommy Determan drove in a run in the loss.

The Mitchell Gun Club this past weekend hosted the South Dakota Junior Trapshooting Championships, and several Mitchell area girls and boys trap shooters had a great showing. The girl’s junior division was dominated by Trinity Wilson who won two individual championships in the 16-yard singles scoring 91 out of 1oo plus, she won the doubles discipline tallying 37 of 50.
Mitchell’s Trell Kaup did well winning the girls senior division winning the doubles and the handicap tallying 44 of 50 and 46 of 50 respectively. Mitchell’s Hadleigh Wilson did well ranking at the top of the leaderboard in the girl’s junior division in the handicap scoring a nice 44 out of 50. And, in the boys 12 and under division Mitchells Conor Herrlein won the 12 and under singles title was a score of 91 out of a possible 100 and marked 161 of 200 in three disciplines to claim the 12 and under boys’ division championship title.
The DWU men’s Elite Basketball Camp is on Saturday August 17TH and are for boys’ basketball players who will learn basic to advanced technique that feature progressive drills that will improve an individual’s game so they will be more skilled at the high school level. The camp instructors are the DWU men’s basketball coaches and players. The boys’ basketball camps are designed for instruction and coaching in and will be given in small groups to help campers master the skills that are covered. The DWU boys’ basketball camps are for boys entering the 9th grade through 12th grade. Check-in time is at 9:30 a.m. Saturday’s schedule is 10 a.m.-2:00 p.m. The DWU boys’ elite basketball camp is $40 per camper. The DWU basketball camps are being taught at the Avera Sports Complex.
