MITCHELL, S.D. (MITCHELLNOW) Mitchell is the first South Dakota city with a population over 10,000 that has been named a “Cardiac Ready” Community.  It’s a program sponsored by the American Heart Association in cooperation with the South Dakota Department of Health.

The City of Mitchell has AEDs (Automatic External Defibrillators) in every public building and in several other locations, Cadwell Park for example.  Many City employees are trained in CPR.  The Mitchell Fire Department offers periodic CPR classes to the community, and those are well attended and received.  In addition, many employers make CPR training available or even require it of their workforce.  Several lives have been saved because an individual was on hand to administer CPR before emergency services could arrive on the scene.

In recognition of those past efforts, and the City of Mitchell and its citizens commitments to life saving procedures, Mitchell has been named a 2024 Cardiac Ready Community.
