Mitchell Kernels
The volleyball teams will all be competing tomorrow night. It will be another road trip. They’ll prepare to head to Sioux Falls to take on Sioux Falls Jefferson at Sioux Falls Jefferson High School. JV will begin at 4:30pm, followed by the sophomores at 5:30pm and then varsity at 7pm. After this game, the Kernels will have a week off before returning to action.
Kernel football will have a game tonight. It’ll be the freshman in action. They’ll travel to take on Tea Area at Tea Are High School at 4:15pm
Dakota Wesleyan
The men’s golf team is in action today and tomorrow. They’re competing in the Whistling Straights Classic at Taylor University. Set to tee off both days at 8am. The women will action be competing, and they’ll be playing in the Battle of the Dance at Hastings College today and tomorrow. Also set to tee off at 8am.
The volleyball team will be playing again tomorrow as they look to end their five-game losing skid. They’ll be at home for the next week and it’ll begin tomorrow against Valley City State when they host the Vikings in a non-conference contest. The Tigers will be in the Christen Family Athletic Center with first serve set for 7pm.
Both soccer teams came up short on the road in Crete, NE as they traveled to take on the Doane Tigers. It was a tough contest for DWU, but they kept it within reach and battled. The women ended up being shutout in their match 2-0 and the men managed to put a goal through but lost 2-1. The women fall to 4-6 overall and the men go to 5-6-2 overall.
Tiger football makes it back-to-back victories to cap off Homecoming in Mitchell! DWU takes down Defensive Coordinator, Chris Bessler’s former team in a massive win. Scoring a season-high 47 points in a 47-21 victory. This squad is finally hitting their stride. Which is a great sign considering this weekend they’ll face one of the best teams in the NAIA at Joe Quintal Field. They’ll host the current No. 5 Dordt Defenders who come into the game an undefeated 5-0.
MLB
Last night was Game 1 of the American League Championship in the MLB Playoffs between the No. 2 seed Cleveland Guardians and No. 1 seed New York Yankees. The game went down on TBS/TruTV and it was a nice way to kick off the league championship games. Pure dominance early with a 9-0 victory from the Dodgers.
WNBA
The WNBA Finals continued yesterday afternoon with Game 2. After letting Game 1 slip away, the No. 1 seed New York Liberty took care of business this time against the No. 2 seed Minnesota Lynx. Winning it, 80-66 and Breanna Stewart leading the way with 21 points and a Finals record seven steals. Now the series will swing over to Minnesota for the next two games and the Lynx will see if they can protect home court. On the Hall of Fame side of things, the WNBA’s Simone Augustus was enshrined in the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame yesterday along with 16 other inductees. Augustus was the 2006 Rookie of the Year, a four-time WNBA Champion, eight-time WNBA All-Star, 2011 WNBA Finals MVP and a member of the W25. She spent most of her career with the Lynx but ended her career with the Los Angeles Sparks. Another former WNBA player was inducted as well. Which was former Phoenix Mercury player – Michele Timms, who helped lead her Australian National team to a bronze medal in 1996 and silver in 2000. She was the first ever Australian player, male or female, to play basketball internationally.
NBA
It was Hall of Fame induction day for some former NBA legends yesterday, along with 13 other inductees. Four former NBA players were inducted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame. Those being: Chauncey Billups, Vince Carter, Michael Cooper and Walter Davis. Billups was a five-time All-Star and 2004 NBA Finals MVP. Carter was an eight-time All-Star and 1999 NBA Rookie of the Year. Cooper was eight-time All-Defensive selection and 1986-87 Defensive Player of the Year. Davis was a six-time All-Star and 1978 Rookie of the Year.
NFL
A full slate of NFL games went down all day long on Sunday beginning with another game in London bright and early at 8:30am for kickoff. Tonight, it’s Monday Night football between the Buffalo Bills and New York Jets. Rough sledding for the Jets as of late, but no better for the Bills as they scored just 30 points total in their last two games after scoring 30+ in their first three games. Both teams have lost their last two games and desperately need a win. The game will air on ESPN & ABC and kickoff is set for 7:15pm.
