RAPID CITY, S.D. (MITCHELLNOW) Forest archaeologists, engineers and HistoriCorps, are working to preserve the Dalton Pavilion, or Dalton Lake Sheltered Fireplace as it was originally known, in the northern Black Hills National Forest.

Built in 1936 by the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC), the Dalton Lake Pavilion is the only surviving example of its particular design on the Black Hills National Forest and is the last remaining standing structure to have survived the ravages of time and the Black Hills Flood of June 1972, at the Dalton Lake Campground.

The Black Hills National Forest and HistoriCorps are working together for several weeks to preserve this special structure while keeping its historical characteristics accurate and intact.

For its Park Rustic-style of architecture and enduring characteristics of CCC-constructed structures, the Dalton Lake Pavilion is currently eligible for listing to the National Register of Historic Places with plans to list it to the National Register in the near future.

HistoriCorps is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization) funded by a combination of fee-for-service, grants, sponsorships, and donations. They provide volunteers and labor to help “save important, historic places for public benefit.”
