MITCHELL, S.D. (MITCHELLNOW) Dakota Wesleyan University’s Department of Education will host its Educators Rising DWU Fall Learning Expo on Wednesday, Nov. 6. More than 190 students and advisers are already registered for the free event which allows high school students interested in the teaching profession a day to come together, hear from teachers and other education experts and engage in hands-on activities, breakout sessions, and exploration of the field of education.

The day begins at 9:15 a.m. in the Sherman Center with a welcome address by DWU president, Dan Kittle. Students will have the opportunity to participate in two breakout sessions and a closing general session with a keynote address from Kelly Pfeifer, NCAA men’s basketball referee. Additionally, a complimentary lunch will be served.

“We are incredibly excited to host the Fall Learning Expo again this year. Our goal is to ignite a passion for teaching and show high school students the profound impact they can make as educators. We hope the event inspires them to see the value of choosing a career in education,” says the event’s lead organizer, DWU Assistant Professor of Education Stephanie Gelderman.

Educators Rising SD is dedicated to the teaching profession, and the DWU education department partners with the organization in several ways. Gelderman and members of the DWU Aspiring Educators Organization serve as evaluators at state events, and Gelderman serves on the board of directors for the organization. Additionally, associate professors of education Tressa Wede and Mindy Childs maintain a virtual Educators Rising SD chapter for area schools that do not have their own local chapters.
