WASHINGTON D.C. (MITCHELLNOW) Sioux Falls, SD -The Singing Legionnaires, of American Legion Post 15 in Sioux Falls, will perform four times this week [Nov 12-16] in the Washington DC area. Members believe the chorus, organized in 1946, to be the last remaining American Legion chorus in the United States
“Our chorus is very excited to be in our nation’s capital, Washington DC to sing at various historical locations around the city,” said Bruce Naasz, president of the Post 15 Singing Legionnaires. “This event is designed for us to represent our South Dakota communities and to honor all of the previous Singing Legionnaires over 75 years of continuous service.
The Singing Legionnaires men’s chorus, currently with 32 members, sings in four-part harmony. The South Dakota Legislature recognized the ensemble in 2023 for its 75 years of performing at military and community activities, including Armed Forces Day, Memorial Day, and POW/MIA Remembrance Service, as well as funerals of veterans.
“From my teaching days, I’m used to traveling with large choirs of high school students,” said Terry Gullickson, choral director for the Singing Legionnaires since 2020. “The Legionnaires, although older, are just as excited about the trip as my high school choirs were about theirs. Many of the Legionnaires either have never been to Washington DC or haven’t been there since they were in high school.”
During their trip November 12 through 16, the group members will perform at an Alexandria Virgina retirement home, the WWII and Lincoln Memorials, and the National Cathedral, Gullickson said, as well as touring military and historical sites, laying a wreath at Mount Vernon and visiting Arlington National Cemetery
