The city of Mitchell just locked in nearly $17 million in loan funding from the state to help pay for a $25 million project to dredge Lake Mitchell. Voters approved the loan in a close vote last June. The 20-year loan comes with a 3.5% interest rate and will be repaid using sales tax revenue. The goal of the project is to improve water quality by removing phosphorus-rich sediment and tackling algae blooms. The city plans to start bidding the project this summer, with completion expected by 2028, and is putting up $8.2 million in local funding.
