The Kernel wrestling teams competed in the River City Rumble over the weekend in Chamberlain. In the 100lb class, McKyla Linke finished first and earned 22 points, Allyson Tilberg added three points in the 107lb class and Frankie Kranz finished second in the 114lb class and scored 19.5 points. In the 120lb class, Logan Her Many Horses earned four points, while Liliana Luque placed second earning 18 points in the 126lb class and Taylor DeJong finished third in the 165lb class earning 12 points. Top 5 placements for the boys include Blaze Sevigny (second) earned 18 points in the 106lb class, Noah Bennett (second) earned 17.5 points in the 120lb class, Van Johnson (second) earned 20 points in the 144lb class, Kaiden Allen (fourth) earned 11 points in the 165lb class, Sean Foote (second) earned 16 points in the 215lb class and Rocky Clark (first) claimed 25.5 points in the heavyweight class. Also adding points was Dax Gukeisen with three points in the 132lb class and Tayven Red Day with two and a half points in the 138lb class.

Each of the Kernel basketball teams are set to compete against Sioux Falls Roosevelt in two different locations tomorrow. The girls will be at SF Roosevelt high school and the boys will be in the World’s Only Corn Palace. Subvarsity games will be at 4 & 5:30pm while each varsity game will tipoff at 7pm.

Dakota Wesleyan

The Track & Field teams competed over the weekend doing well and various personal bests were set. In sprints, sophomore Hailey Oswald had a PR of 28.67 seconds in the 200-meter and freshman Ava Ludwig hit a PR of 10.2 seconds in the 60-meter hurdles. In jumps, Ludwig hit a PR in high jump with 1.5-meter jump. In throws, graduate student Abby Magnuson threw a PR of 14.80 meters in weight. Senior Christian Hanna threw a PR of 11.41 meters in just his second collegiate meet and freshman Gage Hohn threw a PR of 9.06 meters in shot. Placements include Magnuson taking second in shot and fourth in weight throw and freshman Ethan Watson place fifth in shot.

Both Tiger basketball teams saw action yesterday. They were in the World’s Only Corn Palace taking on the Doane Tigers. Your No. 15 ranked women’s team got their revenge after a loss back in November and came out on top, 66-55. Leading all scorers was Avery Broughton with 22 points for DWU and women are now 17-4 overall and 12-3 in the Great Plains Athletic Conference. The men played next and emerged victorious as well, but it ended up being closer than expected. Three Tigers scored in double figures and those were Sam Aslesen (14), Ethan Determan (13) off the bench and Jakob Dobney (11). DWU ended up winning it, 58-54 and improved to 15-6 overall and 8-5 in the GPAC. Additionally, Dobney’s first five points in the game put him over the 1,000-point mark for his career. Tampa Scott IV also eclipsed 1,000+ points in the game against Mount Marty. Both were awarded 1,000-point milestone basketballs in the last two games.

NFL

The NFL Conference Championship games are in the books and the Super Bowl matchup is set after the games that occurred yesterday. It started with the No. 7 seed Washington Commanders at the No. 2 seed Philadelphia Eagles. The game started on the slow end but picked up later on and the Eagles ran away with a 55-23 win. Ending the night was the No. 2 seed Buffalo Bills at the No. 1 seed Kansas City Chiefs. In a much closer game that came down to the wire, it ended up being Kansas City who would come out on top by a score of 32-29. The Eagles and the Chiefs will now meet in for Super Bowl LIX (59) on Feb. 9 in New Orleans, LA with kickoff at 5:30pm on FOX.
