MITCHELL, S.D. (MITCHELLNOW) South Dakota’s mosquito season is here earlier than usual, thanks to warm temperatures and a mild winter. Entomologist Amanda Bachmann says mosquitoes typically become more prevalent in June, but not this year. They don’t need much water to thrive, and some species can carry diseases like West Nile virus. For preventative measures, Bachmann recommends wearing long sleeves, using bug spray, and avoiding dusk and dawn when mosquitoes are most active.
