MITCHELL, SD (Mitchell Now) — The South Dakota Department of Social Services (DSS) announced that Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) benefits will be issued in full and on time this month, despite concerns about potential federal disruptions.

DSS expects to release payments to eligible recipients on Monday, Nov. 10, which is the program’s regular disbursement date. If any delays occur, the department said updates will be shared as soon as possible.

“We understand how important these benefits are to families across South Dakota,” said DSS Cabinet Secretary Matt Althoff. “There is a relief within our department that the federal shutdown will not impact the families who have qualified for the aid we administer.”

The department has been monitoring ongoing federal litigation and awaiting payment guidance from the Food and Nutrition Service. DSS confirmed it has now received approval to issue full benefits to approximately 37,000 households across the state.

In September, South Dakota households received an average of about $390 in SNAP assistance, totaling nearly $15 million statewide.

DSS also acknowledged the support of local feeding ministries, donors, and retailers that stepped up amid uncertainty by offering discounted meals, grocery relief, and gift cards to families in need.
