MITCHELL, SD (Mitchell Now) — As demolition begins on the former Mitchell High School, Superintendent Joe Childs is reminding residents to stay clear of the area while outlining plans to share pieces of the building with the community.
The longtime school, which holds decades of memories for students and alumni, is now being torn down as part of ongoing district efforts.
Officials say bricks from the building will be made available to the public as they are removed during demolition. Crews will sort and set aside bricks in good condition and move them to a designated pickup area located near a Puetz trailer on the southeast side of the site.
The bricks will be offered free of charge, and community members will be able to take what they would like once they are placed in the designated area.
A timeline for availability has not yet been finalized, but interest is expected to be strong among residents and alumni seeking a keepsake.
In the meantime, the public is urged to respect safety barriers and avoid entering the demolition zone. Officials stress that individuals should wait until bricks are moved to the designated pickup location before attempting to collect them.
