MITCHELL, SD (Mitchell Now) — If it rolls, it goes this weekend at the South Dakota State Fairgrounds in Huron.
There will be hundreds of cars, motorcycles and trucks on display from the 4th to the 7th. Make it an early Father’s Day present and bring dad to taste entries at the Original South Dakota BBQ Championships, a competition officially sanctioned by the Kansas City BBQ Society.
South Dakota State Fairgrounds Assistant Manager Candi Briley talked with KMIT-FM about what makes Wheel Jam unique. “It’s not just one event, it’s four action-packed days. Thousands of wheels. It’s a full mix of trucks, bikes, cars, live music, two nights of stock car racing, food…kid’s entertainment…and one of the cool things about Wheel Jam is admission is free to come out onto the fairgrounds to check out all of the things happening.”
Stock car racing enjoys center stage Thursday at 7:00 p.m. at the speedway, the only activity for the night. On Friday, the truck show greets visitors early at 8:00 a.m. Some of the other highlights for the day include the chili tasting competition at 5:30 p.m. and three musical acts. Long Haul Paul takes the stage east of Younger Hall at 6:00 p.m., followed by Ja’net Eastman and the South Hwy 85 Band. The Big Jim Jam Fest comes with a $5 cover charge at 9:00 p.m. The main act is The Donny Dahl Band.
Also at 9:00 on Friday, the truck show turns into a lights extravaganza as the big rigs and trailers turn on their LED bulbs for all to see. Saturday is the event’s premier day, packed to the gills with fun for all ages. Entrants will open the hoods to their hot rods in the Backstreet Cruisers Car Show from noon to 4:00 p.m. The little tykes get in on the action with the Kids Power Wheels Drag Race at 2:30 p.m. There is more music on Saturday night.
Sunday has a pancake breakfast and the parade returns at 11:00 a.m. Wheel Jam ends with a group lunch. Check out the full list of events here.
