MITCHELL, SD (Mitchell Now) — Davison County is spared yet again from a heat advisory, but Hanson, Hutchinson, and McCook County residents should plan on taking extra precautions if outside on Monday.
The National Weather Service Sioux Falls Office is warning that the combination of hot temperatures and high humidity could push heat indices across northwest Iowa, northeast Nebraska, and southeast South Dakota to 104 degrees. The heat index is a measure that tries to capture what it feels like outside when factoring mugginess and other conditions.
The heat advisory is in effect until 9:00 p.m. Monday. Experts advise people to drink plenty of fluids, stay inside with air conditioning when possible, stick to the shade if outdoors, and take plenty of breaks. For those working outside, if they begin to notice signs of heat stroke, treat it as an emergency. Young children and pets should not be left unattended inside of vehicles.
Even those in Davison County should follow suit. While not technically included in the advisory, Davison County will be very warm. Mitchell is forecast to reach a high temperature of 94 degrees with a heat index of 101 degrees.
