MITCHELL, SD (Mitchell Now) — While everyone is encouraged to make the 4th of July one to remember, the Mitchell Police Department wants the celebrations to remain legal.
City ordinance restricts aerial fireworks, whether shells or cakes, to the public right-of-way around Lake Mitchell. They can be lit off between noon and 11:59 p.m. on Friday and Saturday only. Make sure to follow the manufacturer’s instructions. When the show is over, any debris has to be cleaned up and ashes drowned so they don’t reignite. The police department says the Lake Mitchell Campground may be off limits pending a decision from the Parks and Recreation Board.
Throughout the rest of the city, only ground or handheld fireworks are allowed. They have to be kept to private property. At apartment complexes or rental properties, owners must give the okay to use fireworks. Once again, anyone using ground fireworks is expected to follow manufacturer instructions and clean up after themselves. They are also allowed only on July 3rd and 4th from noon to 11:59 p.m.
Officials ask people to be considerate of their neighbors and take into account noise anxiety of neighborhood children and pets as much as possible.
