MITCHELL, SD (Mitchell Now) — Hutchinson County 4-H members are putting their livestock, creative projects and other skills on display during 4-H Achievement Days in Tripp.
Kenley Hinke is showing two cattle, including a baby beef steer and market heifer. She also brought clothing, plants, baked goods and other projects created with her 4-H club.
Hinke’s interest in clothing began while sewing with her great-grandmother. Her Fashion Review experience has since taught her about fabrics, garment content and proper clothing care. Dresses are her favorite because of their versatility.
After beginning her livestock experience with horses, Hinke gradually transitioned to cattle, which is now her primary 4-H focus.
Kinley Werning is showing three pigs and two goats, along with static exhibits in visual arts, home environment, Fashion Review and foods.
Werning said goats can be particularly stubborn, recalling a State Fair experience when her goat repeatedly jumped into the air while she tried to lead it. Her goal is to earn another trip to the State Fair this year.
Megan Martinez is showing five goats and brought 15 static exhibits. Her projects include Fashion Review, home environment, visual arts and child development.
Among her projects are a wreath, wall decorations and an “I Spy” bottle filled with rice as an activity for children. Martinez said her favorite parts of Achievement Days are spending time with friends and showing her animals.
