MITCHELL, SD (Mitchell Now) Florists in Mitchell and surrounding communities will help stock local food pantries during Caring Rose Week, Nov. 9-14.
Participating shops will offer discounted bouquets of one dozen roses and accept canned goods as partial payment. Each florist selects a local food-distribution charity, keeping donations in the community where they are collected.
Area participating businesses include:
- Country Florist in Armour
- Nepstad’s in Mitchell
- Cherrybee’s in Mitchell
- The Picket Fence in Chamberlain
- The Flower Barrel in Chamberlain
- Ms Bumblebee’s Flowers & Gifts in Parkston
- Flowers & Feathers in Plankinton
- Platte Floral & Rentals in Platte
- 2nd & Bloom in Wessington Springs
Organizers expect participating florists across the central United States to collect more than 20 tons of food. The drive comes as colder weather and seasonal expenses place additional pressure on household budgets.
Now in its 28th year, Caring Rose Week has distributed more than 500,000 pounds of food since its inception, according to organizers.
Harry Whelden, general manager of North American Wholesale Florists in Sioux Falls, developed the program.
“Over 200 flower shops across the Great Plains are taking the time and energy to help meet this need, and I’m truly grateful,” Whelden said in the announcement.
Customers should contact participating shops for bouquet prices and canned-food donation requirements.
