MITCHELL, SD (Mitchell Now) — Hanson County 4-H members are showing off their creativity and agricultural skills during 4-H Achievement Days, with projects ranging from livestock and photography to rockets, cooking and Legos.
Ben Neller took on a rocket project this year, joking that he put “millions of hours” into building it. After completing the rocket, Neller launched it and watched it travel high into the air.
His 4-H involvement also includes cattle and sewing projects. Neller has made pillowcases, including one featuring Pokémon.
Lauren is showing cattle and completed several other projects this year, including photography, cooking and Legos.
Her favorite was a Lego project featuring a two-level pink house with four rooms. When it comes to showing cattle, Lauren said one of the biggest challenges is trying not to get stepped on.
Wylee is showing pigs and participating in photography. He said pigs are relatively easy to show once they enter the ring but can be more difficult to handle outside it.
Wylee has participated in photography throughout his four years in 4-H, using his mom’s phone to capture animals, sunrises and other subjects. He has also completed a project comparing homemade mayonnaise with store-bought mayonnaise.
Wylee said he likes the new Achievement Days schedule, which separates birds from other livestock. He said the previous format, with everything happening on the same day, could be hectic and sometimes kept participants at the event until sunset.
