MITCHELL, SD (Mitchell Now) — Area fireworks displays begin this weekend in the runup to Independence Day.
With this year being America’s 250th anniversary, expect most shows to try and pull out all the stops. The Ethan Fire Department will light the fuse on local celebrations at dusk on Saturday, June 27th. The show is 100% community funded with donation boxes set out at Mike’s Corner gas station and The Ammo Box for those who want to help contribute.
Kids parachute fireworks will drop from the sky an hour prior to the main show. The fireworks are put on by the local volunteer fire department at Ethan Community Park.

Mitchell is waiting until the Fourth of July proper to send shells into the night sky to boom over Lake Mitchell. The show is organized by the Mitchell Exchange Club and will be choreographed to music broadcast on the radio by KMIT-FM.
Beginning at 9:45 p.m., the theme is “Red, White and Blue, Through and Through.” The show has been programmed to last for 20 minutes and will contain twelve pallets of fireworks.
July 3rd is the month’s First Fridays on Main Street event. Those attending are asked to wear red, white, and blue. The car show awards will go to vehicles with patriotic paint jobs. Kids will once again take part in a USA-inspired bike decorating contest. First Fridays begins at 5:00 p.m. on Main Street near the Corn Palace.
