MITCHELL, SD (Mitchell Now) — A federal jury has convicted a Fort Thompson man of assaulting a Bureau of Indian Affairs law enforcement officer at the jail in Lower Brule.

Patrick Wind, also known as Patrick Azure, 34, was found guilty of assaulting, resisting and impeding a federal officer following a two-day trial in Pierre. The jury returned its verdict Oct. 29, 2026, according to U.S. Attorney Ron Parsons.

The charge stems from a May 14, 2025, incident. Evidence presented at trial showed that a BIA officer responded to a request to remove Wind from a Fort Thompson residence. The officer located Wind inside and transported him to the jail in Lower Brule.

At the jail, Wind became combative and assaulted the officer by kicking and headbutting him.

A federal grand jury indicted Wind in August 2025. He faces up to eight years in prison, a $250,000 fine, three years of supervised release and a $100 special assessment to the Federal Crime Victims Fund.

A presentence investigation was ordered.

The Bureau of Indian Affairs’ Lower Brule Agency investigated the case. Assistant U.S. Attorney Meghan Dilges prosecuted it.
