MITCHELL, SD (Mitchell Now) — Leadership changes are coming to John Paul II Catholic School, as Katrina Hostler has been named the next Head of School beginning at the end of the 2025-26 academic year.

The announcement was made Friday by Fr. Yamato Icochea, pastor of the Mitchell Catholic parishes and superintendent of the school. Hostler will be supported by Brenda Mitzel, who will serve as Mentor Principal during Hostler’s first year in administration. The pair will succeed current Head of School Sarah Timmer, who has accepted a new position with the Mitchell School District.

In her new role, Hostler will oversee daily operations, instructional leadership, Catholic culture and communication with families and staff. She will serve as the primary point of contact for the school community.

“I have spent my career helping students grow academically while also supporting their physical, social and spiritual development,” Hostler said. “I am passionate about strengthening a Christ-centered culture where a love of learning and virtue are intentionally cultivated.”

Hostler currently teaches sixth grade at John Paul II and previously spent 14 years at Ethan School, where she taught multiple subjects and led student leadership programs. She holds a bachelor’s degree in leadership and a master’s degree in education from Dakota Wesleyan University.

Mitzel, as Mentor Principal, will continue overseeing the school’s mission, governance and compliance while guiding Hostler through the transition.

Church leaders expressed confidence in the new leadership team, noting Hostler’s experience and dedication will help ensure the school’s continued success.
