MITCHELL, SD (Mitchell Now) — Mega Cheer is celebrating a national championship season for its elite cheer team, Black Reign.

The Youth Level 2 team opened its season in January by earning Overall Grand Champion at its first competition, securing an Ultra Paid Bid to an end-of-season event.

That bid sent Black Reign to Virginia Beach, Virginia, for the Royal Beach Dual Nationals, which featured two back-to-back competitions. On Saturday, the team competed at The Crown Nationals and earned a Silver Championship.

The athletes returned to the mat Sunday at the Ultimate Cheer Experience competition, improving their score by more than three points and earning the Gold Championship.

Mega Cheer also received the Royal Gold Chain during Sunday’s awards ceremony. The award is given to one gym that demonstrates outstanding sportsmanship, positivity and crowd spirit. The honor is not based on scores, but on character and team culture.

Black Reign returned home as national champions with a championship banner, custom rings and the Royal Gold Chain.

Team members are Grace Kindt, Maya Wermers, Piper Hofer, Jeysa Schroth, Ainsley Miiller, Makenleigh Pletten, Gwen Patton, Paetyn Sudbeck, Cora Pohlen, Clairessa Wenninghoff, Olivia Dumas, Ava Dyce, Tayla Wontach and Charlotte Gebhart.

The team is coached by Ashley Catron, Jena Sonne, Kendyl Bachman and Ariel Wermers.
