MITCHELL, SD (Mitchell Now) — The City of Mitchell has officially put out a request for bids on a second fire station.
In the Request for Proposal (RFP) instructions, the city and lead architect, designArc Group, list the future building as 7,748 square feet. It will be made from precast concrete, have living quarters and other site improvements to turn the land into a fully functioning station. When the estimated $2.5 million project was included in the budget last year, Fire Chief Shannon Sandoval told Mitchell Now that the department already owns the equipment that would be housed at the new station. It would also allow Mitchell Fire to add six new employees.
Bids are being accepted until 1:30 a.m. on August 5th. The architect will hold a prebid meeting on July 29th at 1:30 p.m. at the project site to go over the specifics of the job and answer any questions firms might have. The more informed the bidder is on what is required, the more accurate their bid submission will be.
The new station will need to be open and fully functional by September 15, 2027. Some benefits for the community will be lower response times to calls on the north end of the city. Typically, insurance companies will factor that in for private property insurance rates, resulting in savings over the life of the building that help to mitigate its overall cost.
