MITCHELL, S.D. (Mitchell Now) — The Mitchell Ice Arena is set to undergo approximately $1.7 million in upgrades aimed at addressing long-standing structural issues and improving the surrounding facility.
Construction work focused on repairing the arena’s roof is expected to be completed by the end of September. The project will also include improved drainage around the building and the addition of more parking spaces for visitors and event traffic.
The primary focus of the renovation centers on repairs to the wall and roof connection between the Mitchell Ice Arena and the Mitchell Activities Center. Officials say that area has experienced recurring leaks since the ice arena originally opened in 2013.
Several repair efforts have been attempted over the years, but leaks have continued to reappear, prompting the need for a larger and more comprehensive construction project.
City and facility officials believe the new upgrades will provide a more permanent solution to the water intrusion problems while also improving accessibility and infrastructure around the arena.
The Mitchell Ice Arena serves as a hub for youth hockey, figure skating and community recreational activities throughout the year. The adjoining Mitchell Activities Center also hosts a variety of athletic and community events.
Construction is expected to continue through the summer months with completion anticipated before the start of the fall season.
