MITCHELL, SD (Mitchell Now) — The Mitchell Planning Commission approved a request to divide a commercial park consisting of 10 business suites along Commerce Street in northwest Mitchell at its Monday meeting.

The new development is located on the other side of Highway 37 from Cadwell Park, near where the Coca-Cola bottling plant is situated. Owned by Groeneweg Construction, the first tenant is Jacked Up Fitness, which has taken over one of the prime corner lots in the past month.

Groeneweg plans on building a private road, Legacy Drive, that will connect each unit in the business park. Each tenant will contribute to the road and complex success through a pact similar to a homeowner association.

The planning commission also approved a variance filed by Brandon Wegehaupt for his home in the private Skyline Estates neighborhood just outside of town. Wegehaupt is asking for the setback on his property from Westview Drive to be reduced from 35 feet to four feet. He plans on converting his current garage into a mud room and entryway. Wegehaupt would then build a new attached garage for the home much closer to the roadside than how the property is laid out now.

All actions by the planning commission must still go before the Mitchell City Council, which has the final say in the matter.
