MITCHELL, SD (Mitchell Now) — The first day of school for Mitchell School District 17-2 is Wednesday, Aug. 19, and families are making final preparations for the new school year.

Before students head back to class, parents are encouraged to confirm schedules, transportation plans and required paperwork through the district’s student information system. Families should also make sure emergency contact information is current and that any required health or medication forms have been submitted to their child’s school.

Students riding district buses should review pickup and drop-off times before the first day. Parents driving children to school are reminded to follow designated drop-off and pickup procedures and allow extra travel time during the first week as traffic is typically heavier.

School officials also recommend that students:

  • Charge school-issued devices before the first day.
  • Pack school supplies and backpacks the night before.
  • Get back into a regular sleep schedule ahead of the start of classes.
  • Eat a healthy breakfast before heading to school.

Families should also review student handbooks for attendance policies, dress code expectations and school safety procedures.

The district encourages parents to stay connected by monitoring school communications, including email, text alerts, social media and the district website for announcements about activities, athletics and upcoming events throughout the school year.

As the new school year begins, motorists are reminded to watch for children walking or biking to school, obey school zone speed limits and stop for school buses displaying flashing red lights.

With classrooms reopening Aug. 19, district officials hope students, families and staff have a safe and successful start to another school year.
