MITCHELL, SD (Mitchell Now) — Mitchell Technical College is expanding access to nursing education with online pathways designed to help students enter or advance in the profession while remaining connected to their communities.

The expansion includes a two-year online Licensed Practical Nursing pathway and a two-year online Registered Nursing pathway for LPNs. A one-year online LPN-to-RN option also is available, giving students a choice of timelines.

How Does Mitchell Tech’s Online LPN Program Work?

The two-year online LPN pathway is a part-time diploma program that combines online nursing and general education courses with in-person clinical, laboratory and simulation experiences.

Regional health care partnerships help provide hands-on learning closer to students’ homes. The format is designed to help students balance nursing education with work and family responsibilities.

What Online Options Are Available for LPNs Becoming RNs?

Mitchell Tech’s LPN-to-RN program offers one-year and two-year online options. Nursing theory and general education courses are delivered online, with limited campus visits and required clinical experiences.

Graduates earn an Associate of Applied Science degree and become eligible to take the National Council Licensure Examination for registered nurses, or NCLEX-RN.

According to the college’s announcement, the expanded pathways aim to reduce barriers for students who cannot relocate for school while supporting South Dakota’s rural health care workforce.

Prospective students can review program requirements and application information on Mitchell Tech’s website.
