On Monday, the Mitchell School Board unanimously approved Schemmer to be the design firm for the new Mitchell High School project. Monday’s meeting was held at Gertie Belle Rogers Elementary School.

Superintendent of Mitchell schools Joe Graves said the he hopes the design will be ready to begin some construction of the new school before the winter of 2022.

“High schools are buildings that take a lot more usage,” Graves said, answering a question from the public Monday night regarding the necessity of a new building. “For the most part, you can open an elementary school at 7:30 a.m. and close it at 4 p.m. … The high school can literally be open from 6:30 a.m. to 10 p.m. It just gets a lot more usage and is showing its wear.”

Also happening at Monday’s board meeting, the board approved the purchase of a used 2012 John Deere S660 combine for $101,177.

The board also approved on second reading new policies and revised current policies related to legalization of medical marijuana, and approved on first reading new policies and revised current policies related to students in alternative instruction.

The next school board meeting will be Monday, Sept. 13, at Mitchell High School.
